Schlechteranthus hallii is one of about six Schlechteranthus species mainly recognised by their compact growth form and short, grey-green leaves. They occur in the Richtersveld and Namaqualand, all endemic to the Northern Cape. Until recently only two species were recognised in this genus, viz. S. hallii and S. maximilianii.
The young leaves of S. hallii are smooth and succulent for a limited period only. New growth and wrinkling succeed each other seasonally rather briskly, bringing colour changes as moisture and nutrient resources are consumed or replenished.
Old leaves becoming desiccated assume in succession the beige, red, black and grey colours seen in picture, representing milestones of decline. Maybe the Afrikaans common name of vleisbos (meat bush) refers to the reddish colouring that comes and goes (Williamson, 2010; Smith, et al, 1998; Herre, 1971; iNaturalist).
