The two Colchicum scabromarginatum leaves are spread flat on the ground opposite each other. The plant’s central inflorescence is held protectively by more erect, leaf-like bracts. Some of these plants have short underground stems connecting the corm to the annual, above-ground parts.
The visible floral parts are mainly the many small, yellow-green tepals curving in to the brown, oblong anthers.
Plants bearing their flowers directly on the ground are called geoflorous. In this species the flowers may be rodent-pollinated (Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist).
