    Mountainous parts of the bushveld include the well-known Waterberg, Soutpansberg and Drakensberg escarpment regions, although much of bushveld land is flat. This koppie in the Pilanesberg lies in the western bushveld where the rainfall is only about 350 mm per annum, received in summer.

    Rich plant life comprising grasses, trees, shrubs and succulents presents much variety to the bushveld hiker. Surprises of encountering uncommon, even rare species are specially valued when finding them in flower. Add the annuals and bulbous plants living here and one is sure to meet something never seen before… often something with an elusive name.
