As modernity and its descendants remove humanity further from nature, the task of introducing children to nature isnt going away. Electronic devices and manufactured toys reduce the appeal of the wild to children of upper classes with inadequate exposure and bonding to the earths green. The fanatic greenie doesnt help either.
Ghetto, shanty or high-rise township children lacking the gizmos, also have to be pointed to animal and vegetation, mountain and stream. You cannot love and cherish (or even be interested in) what you do not know! And the object of the exercise is within walking distance of most. Once they love it, they wont bury it under litter.
The municipal park and botanical garden, participating in the river clearing project, the school garden competition, rewarding tree planters and many more such things should fill the memory of tomorrows young adults. Quality outdoor time spent with parents during picnics, camping and hiking, whatever form the feasible bush holiday of the neighbourhood may take, will inculcate the desired affinity and respect.
The minds of the next generation: that is the best bet for nature conservation.
