Geissorhiza ovata flowers

The flower stem of Geissorhiza ovata may branch and produce from one to a few flowers. They grow in a spike, positioned spirally with green bracts below. The flower is fairly large, tepals opening widely on a long, narrow tube, above a bulging green calyx. The corolla is white or faintly tinged with pink on the upper surfaces towards the tepal tips. The tepals are elliptic with rounded tips.

The lower surfaces of the tepals are darker pink and longitudinally lined as can be seen on the unopened bud in the photo. Flowering starts late in winter and proceeds until mid-spring. Thin, dark purple anthers can be seen here, as well as the tall style with its branching of the stigma into three (Bean and Johns, 2005; Manning, 2007).
