The fruit covering of Gomphocarpus cancellatus has a hairy, pale green surface, blotched with dark purple and some creamy yellow. Its stalk, also purple and hairy, attaches to the fruit in an abrupt twist, positioned against the side of the inflated fruit.

Thin and soft papilla-like outgrowths with pointed tips stand in spaced rows along the surface of the fruit. These cylindrical protuberances are unequal in size, some broad at the base and variously curved.
