Geranium incanum anther cluster

Geranium incanum growing near the beach at Vermont and Onrus has white flowers. The petals are sometimes notched, not always. Dark veins of varying size grow from the base of the petals, not quite reaching the tips. These veins on white-petalled flowers may also be pink. The flower colour range also includes pale pink, violet or magenta.

The pale cream anthers in the flower centre seem two-lobed in the photo, especially those large ones in the outer whorl of five; there are ten stamens in all, two per petal. The disc of five nectary glands in the base of the flower is there for motivating pollinators.

The ovary of a Geranium flower is superior, emerges above the petal bases. The flowers grow on long, slender stalks from leaf axils. Flower diameter varies between 1,5 cm and 3 cm (Manning, 2007; Privett and Lutzeyer, 2010; Bean and Johns, 2005).
