    This large Gasteria brachyphylla var. brachyphylla inflorescence, a panicle branched into several racemes, offers meal services to sunbirds in the Little Karoo. Once the flowers taller than surrounding vegetation have been noticed, the lower ones are easily accessed.

    Winter and spring flowers brighten both the karoid landscape and the food security prospects of at least some of the animals roaming the veld on foot or in the air.
