Gasterias are related to the aloes and haworthias in the family Asphodelaceae. The generic name Gasteria comes from the stomach-shaped flowers that characterise this genus.
Gasterias in the garden may quite easily be horticulturally developed cultivars or also natural hybrids that tend to occur freely.
