Scadoxus puniceus on an arid plain

This group of Scadoxus puniceus plants were seen in flower near the Botswana border, blooming while no leaf stems (pseudostems) were present.

The floral bracts are large and the peduncles are uniformly pale green. Peduncles may sometimes be whitish towards the base.

Rocks do wonders for preventing plant trampling and sometimes destruction by fire, although the rhizomatous cum bulbous part of S. puniceus is usually spared that from being underground.

The plants grow and flower in the open, often better in dappled shade (Duncan, et al, 2016; iNaturalist).
