Schlechteranthus steenbokensis flower centre

At close quarters the Schlechteranthus steenbokensis flower displays shine on its pink-purple petals, the surfaces faintly uneven to membranous. The flower diameter is 15 mm to 20 mm.

The dense, white cone of filamentous staminodes and stamens bulge slightly in the middle, the filaments hair- or papillae-fringed. Some pinkish is visible near the top of the staminodes, also dull yellow of the anthers occurring on stamens, not the staminodes. The pollen is white. The staminodes and stamens cover the nine or ten stigmas. The nectaries form a ring on the raised top of the ovary.

The fruit capsule that follows has nine or ten locules. The valve wings are broad at the base, narrowing towards the tips and end in awns. The closing body is white, rarely black and does not close the exit of the locule completely (Klak and Bruyns, 2016: Expansion of Schlechteranthus (Ruschioideae, Aizoaceae) to include Polymita, with a new species from Namaqualand, South Africa.
