The three broad-tipped lobes of the Lobelia pinifolia flower upper lip exceed the pair of lower lip lobes notably in size. The two lips of each flower face in opposite directions and outwards, their tips differing markedly. The lower lip faces the sepal tips, and more or less meet them. They are still smaller, dark and hairy, unlike any petal parts.
Still smaller than all these are the pairs of mostly white, sometimes partly yellow, scimitar-shaped markings found at the bases of the upper lip lobes (Manning, 2007; iNaturalist).
