    Hermannia coccocarpa leaves and flowers

    Hermannia coccocarpa leaves and flowers
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Judd Kirkel Welwitch

The simple, alternate and short-stalked leaves of Hermannia coccocarpa are oblong to linear, occasionally lanceolate or ovate with variably toothed, scalloped or small-lobed margins. The blades are hairless, the midribs sunken on top. Lateral veins, also sunken on top, ascend into the lateral lobes or teeth. The leaf dimensions are about 2,5 cm long and 0,8 cm wide but variable.

The flowers grow solitary or in pairs, nodding on slender pedicels from leaf axils and stem-tips. The brown, short-haired calyces are cup-shaped, each calyx ending in five acutely pointed sepal tips. The soft-textured, round-tipped petals angle out slightly. Corolla colour varies from white to pink or bluish purple. Flowering happens in spring to autumn.

The fruits are oblong, berry-like capsules (Euston-Brown and Kruger, 2023; iNaturalist; https://www.worldfloraonline.org).
