The simple, opposite leaves of Alectra basutica are sessile and ovate to lanceolate with pointed or rounded tips. The soft blades are pale green to yellowish green, with a hint of purple on some margins and near the tips. There is enough green in the leaves for the plant to do some of its own photosynthesis.
The blades are sparsely to stubbly hairy. The leaf margins are entire, as what might appear like minute teeth in picture are likely to be merely hairs (Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; Visser, 1981; iNaturalist).
