The dark red, purplish or brownish leaf discoloration that Diplosoma retroversum sometimes undergoes in extreme situations speak of seasonal plant stress. The plant responds with a covering like botanical sunscreen to its ultraviolet and thermal challenges. The fruit capsules in the leaf-body centres are developed and ripened amidst these environmental trials.

In picture some white hairs, the old purple petals now dry, are to be seen. The dark, roundish patches in their midst are the developing capsules. There are also small, erect, fleshy protrusions visible. These are the lobes of the sepals that still protect the unripe seeds (Frandsen, 2017; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; Smith, et al, 1998; iNaturalist; https://www.worldfloraonline.org).
