This large and compact clump of currently non-flowering Hoodia pilifera stems is thought to belong to subsp. annulata, clump size the main clue used.
The columnar, erect stems of both subspecies are studded with tubercles, arranged in twenty to thirty vertical columns separated by channels. Mainly branched from the base, the rough, grey stems of the subspecies are hard to tell apart without flowers. They have dark tips here, showing new growth emerging, likely to appear similar on both plants. Location would have helped, but it is uncertain where the photo was taken.
An impressive size has been reached by this plant in the veld, making it worth seeing (Smith, et al, 2017; iNaturalist).
