The four-angled stems of Stapelia hirsuta var. hirsuta are pale green to soft green-brown. They appear faintly velvety to smooth. The tubercle bulges on the stem ridges end in whitish scars where the short-lived, tiny leaflets have mainly already dropped off.
The somewhat sparse but long red hair on the dome-shaped corolla of the flower appears to be absent from its lobes that masquerade as legs here. The flowers are attached to lower stem parts by their pedicels. Observers of such a plant bearing leaves only may find it hard to imagine a flower of this ilk possible (White and Sloane, 1937; iNaturalist; https://www.worldfloraonline.org).
