The habitat of Vanheerdea roodiae is often daunting to its uncomplaining inhabitants, more to outsiders. Environmental toughness reduces alien invader visit duration here better than visa requirements ever could. The greenish yellow to yellow leaves indicate that a plant is coping well. Environmental stress in the form of drought, heat or cold turns the leaves red or purple. Even high sunlight intensity takes its toll on the plant population.

The closeness together among leaf bodies ensures covering of the ground in what is their permanent residence. This contributes to cooling, beneficial for the roots, and even some moisture retention. Leaf bodies succeed each other in the clump or mat, the shortness of the branches ensuring that they do not spread apart causing gaps, which would disadvantage the plants in dealing with the elements (Frandsen, 2017; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; Smith, et al, 1998; iNaturalist; https://llifle.com).
