Aulax umbellata many female flowerheads

Aulax umbellata flowering may in season be prolific as on this female bush. Peak season is mostly early summer. Clusters of cup-shaped open flowers, white inside, are taller than the old flowers already closed again in the onset of fruiting. The older open flowers, dark inside, are of intermediate height, below the level of the younger ones.

What is taller than all of them in picture are the new growth leafy stem tips where the green colouring has not fully taken over from faint yellow or red. The rounded leaf tips curve in, as do leaves typically on the more southerly plants in the natural distribution of the species, often growing in calcareous soils (Manning, 2007; Rebelo, 1995; iNaturalist; https://pza.sanbi.org).
