Schotia afra var. afra wing-like petals

A couple of Schotia afra var. afra obovate petals flare expansively in pink above the red of the calyx. Each flower does have five petals, but only two of them spread conspicuously upwards here in the fully open flower. The remaining three stay upright, partly enclosed within the calyx.

The ten stamens of each flower arise with the petals, delivering pollen at the level of the petal tips held up by long white filaments. The partly opened flower next door still has red filaments. Its petal tips still converge at the top but are already much taller than the slightly redder sepals around the flower base.

The red styles end in tiny head-like stigmas, a little taller than the stamens. Numerous younger buds in the photo vary in size, ending in rounded tips that display faint, dark crosses where the four closed sepals meet for now (Venter, 2012; Coates Palgrave, 2002; iNaturalist; https://www.worldfloraonline.org).
