    Erica discolor leaves and flowers

    Erica discolor leaves and flowers
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Francelle van Zyl

Short green, erect leaves accompany the Erica discolor flower cluster of mainly nodding corolla tubes in the photo. The dull, off-white tube tip parts of the flowers change colour gradually into the red of the longer basal sections. The increasing shading in transition sections are more often seen in Erica flowers than abrupt colour change, a rarer phenomenon.

The styles are quite far exserted, some curved down like flamingo beaks or golf clubs. Their stigmas probably no longer await pollen, already withering. The stigmas are tiny, some appearing greenish. The brown of the included anthers are visible through the slightly translucent tips of the corollas (Manning and Helme, 2024; iNaturalist).
