    Syncarpha canescens pink buds

    Syncarpha canescens pink buds
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Francelle van Zyl

These top-shaped buds of Syncarpha canescens flowerheads display the acute upper angles of the isosceles triangles formed by the overlapping pale pink bracts that collectively cover the developing florets inside. Usually growing solitary, this stem-tip flaunts a pair of buds.

The velvety effect from the soft, short hair covering on the grey leaves has been enhanced here by the work of what may be some camera-shy spider. If it is lunch it is looking for, it will have to wait until the heads open, before there is likelihood of ensnaring a prospective pollinating insect or two (Curtis-Scott, et al, 2020; Manning, 2007; iNaturalist).
