While this flowering Hypodiscus aristatus plant is male, the pale inside surfaces of the spreading spathes appear equally pale on flowering bushes of both sexes, as they spread from below the clusters of spikelets. The rest of the flowering and fruiting parts are brown, grown at the tips of the green or yellow green culms.
Some grey culms visible in the tuft have died. New ones are added in the plant’s annual growth. These plants are estimated to become several decades old, also resprouting after fire (Euston-Brown and Kruger, 2023; Dorrat-Haaksma and Linder, 2012; Bean and Johns, 2005; iNaturalist).
