    Erica baccans flowers

    Erica baccans flowers
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Francelle van Zyl

The stalked, rose-pink Erica baccans flowers nod solitary from upper leaf axils of young shoots, whorled in threes or fours. There are leaf-like bracteoles with keels behind the flowers, also assuming floral colouring. The loose, papery and dry sepals are pink, keeled and petal-like, large and almost as long as the petals. The pink, globular corollas end in shallow lobes, slightly outcurving from the constricted mouths. The corolla is up to 6 mm long. The eight anthers and the short, stout style remain inside the corolla.

Profuse flowering happens from before midautumn to the end of winter (Manning and Helme, 2024; Manning, 2007; iNaturalist; https://pza.sanbi.org).
