Certain bare patches among the coastal scrub in the Cape erupt in spectacular new life at the end of summer when Brunsvigia orientalis flowers. If there were live bulbs hidden deeply under the surrounding shrubs, they would not be able to share in this performance, until after the next fire. The mainly winter leaves have to receive sun for photosynthesis of food to feed the bulb and grow the flowers (Duncan, et al, 2016; Bean and Johns, 2005; iNaturalist).
