    Bolboschoenus maritimus new growth

    Bolboschoenus maritimus new growth
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Francelle van Zyl

New Bolboschoenus maritimus growth begins unseen below ground level from elongated, horizontal rhizomes, usually tuberous near the stems. Young, light green leaf blades ascend freely away from the stems that they clutch, sheathing at the base. Several leaves grow on each erect stem, here still low on the sandy ground. Dense stands may also ensue in muddy conditions (Curtis-Scott, et al, 2020; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; Pooley, 1998; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; https://pza.sanbi.org).
