Unravelling of the old Bolboschoenus maritimus inflorescence parts is happening here to the pointed spikelets. First floral and together, then fruity and careless about used-up, discardable components, the spikelets gradually lose their finger-like shapes. The glumes, the bracts around the spikelets become dishevelled and dry as do the other floral parts.
The ripe fruits are dry, one-seeded achenes enclosed within the fruit walls, the pericarps. The seeds inside are glossy brown to dark brown nutlets, broadly ovoid to somewhat tear-shaped and flattened or slightly three-sided, often with a small beak-like tip. A seed is about 2 mm to 4 mm long (Curtis-Scott, et al, 2020; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; Pooley, 1998; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; https://pza.sanbi.org).
