    Eriocephalus africanus fruits

    Eriocephalus africanus fruits
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

The fluffy fruits of Eriocephalus africanus are used by some birds in nest building; one procreative system becoming functional in another.

The fruit is initially covered in the downy white fluff, the remainder of scaly bracts visible in the centre of each seed-head. Later it becomes pendulous, the peduncle visible.
