Berkheya onobromoides flowerhead

The flowerhead of the disseldoring, Berkheya onobromoides, comprises a dense mass of pale yellow disc florets, but no ray florets around them. The disc florets are thin and cylindrical, standing erectly in the receptacle, clustered closely together. The flowerhead may measure 1 cm across. The inner row of spiny involucral bracts are the palest here, although not the longest. Flowering happens in late spring to early autumn.

In the flowerhead seen in picture, growing in a sandy, dry riverbed near Montagu during March, some of the outer florets have already opened; the rest are soon to follow (Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iSpot; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010).
