This Wachendorfia flower photographed in September at Onrus may be Wachendorfia paniculata. The markings on the upper tepal bases are not dark as on many of the plants though but variably coloured and present on flowers of the species. The flowers have sideways spreading stamens, one in the same direction as the style, the other two opposite them. The tepals have a more yellow colouring than on some W. paniculata flowers that are pale apricot.

Other Wachendorfia species that occur in the Hermanus area are the smaller W. multiflora with narrow tepals, green bracts and leaves longer than the flower stem, W. thyrsiflora and W. brachyandra with shorter stamens. That means the whole genus of four species is found here (Manning, 2007; Bean and Johns, 2005; iNaturalist; www.pacificbulbsociety.org).
