    Asparagus capensis flowering

    Asparagus capensis flowering
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Ivan Lätti

The stems of Asparagus capensis appear like flowering cylinders in the photo. They are densely covered in short-shoots full of false leaves and flowers. The soft appearance may be misleading, capable of causing injury as there are sharp spines hidden on the lush stems.

The scented flowers grow solitary or in pairs from the tips of the many spur-branchlets. The tepals and stamens spread widely in a star-shape. The green or cream, superior ovary sitting on top of the receptacle in the flower base is small and globular (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; Manning, 2007; iSpot).
