    Spring splendour

    Spring splendour
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

The faintest sheen of flower colour on Little Karoo veld after rain brings exhilaration. Abundance is rarely seen here, so when it arrives, it will be celebrated!

To eyes not familiar with this land, the festivity may appear a meagre affair. It is the contrast, the long wait filled with yearning that sharpens the expectation so for those tied to the land. Greyness and harsh conditions can be endured more easily if a feast comes here, even once in a lifetime.

The October merriment sees hardly all the flat land fully covered in vegetation, let alone the rocky slopes where topsoil is meagre. That seldom happens! Rainy respite delivers the periodic catharsis, a breather, but hardship stretches fortitude to the limit and lingers close most of the time.
