Romulea camerooniana flower

Romulea camerooniana is the proper name of this flower previously thought to be Romulea thodei. It is a Drakensberg and eastern grassland (near the escarpment) plant; a member of the Iridaceae family. This is a small bulbous plant with pale yellow centres in the attractive pink flowers. Some fine dark lines from the base of the cup beyond the throat into the pink can be seen on the petals.

Many Romulea species are endemic to the winter rainfall areas of the south-western parts of South Africa. Known as froetang or knikkertjie in Afrikaans, the fruits are eaten by children, animals and some traditional populations. Some Romulea plants have become popular as garden subjects.
