    Schizoglossum bidens subsp. bidens

    Schizoglossum bidens subsp. bidens
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Judd Kirkel Welwitch

Schizoglossum bidens subsp. bidens, previously scientifically S. truncatum, is a perennial growing from a tuber. There were seven recognised subspecies of S. bidens at the time of writing in 2024.

The subspecies distribution is in KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and the Eastern Cape, also in Lesotho.

The habitat is grassland, some at high elevations in the Drakensberg. The habitat population is deemed of least concern early in the twenty first century.

Indigenous people in the Drakensberg and Lesotho sometimes eat the leaves and stems of S. bidens (Pooley, 1998; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
