Lanaria lanata flower stalks

Two young Lanaria lanata flowering stalks, not yet at full flowering length and strength, arise from the tuft of long, ribbed leaves of this Kogelberg plant. The time is early November, the start of the plant’s flowering season that will be over before the end of summer.

Some signs of a fire a few years ago (tall black sticks indicating where the big shrubs stood), are still present in the surrounding veld among the young fynbos.

As the average vegetation height increases, L. lanata’s woolly blooms will be less noted in the species mix. When the next fire moves through, this plant will survive though, resprouting from its thick-rooted black rhizome (Manning, 2007; Bean and Johns, 2005; Manning, 2007; iNaturalist).
