Many kinds of vygies or mesembs bring colour in season to the harsh stony slopes of the Little Karoo. The flower colours are often yellow, pink or purple, but there are many surprises.
Some tall rounded vygie shrubs catch the eye from a distance when rain paints rainbow colours over the leaves. Other shy ones will reveal only few small flowers to those that come near. A walk through this veld after rain always brings reward.
The spirit is lifted by the flowers, often to drop suddenly when witnessing the extent of pervasive littering by generations of people who have spent time here. Much of the glass, plastic, rubber and metal castaway items are degrading very slowly. What is already in position will do harm and disfigurement of the natural heritage for generations. Let alone what is still to be added by those not educated to do better.
For most there isnt another country to move to when this one becomes too ugly to live in.
