These spectacular Disa amoena flowers grow in windy, wet and misty conditions at high altitude in the Mpumalanga Drakensberg.
Their natural habitat is mostly very different from the majority of gardening situations, generally precluding success from transplantation. So, while they are so attractive in the veld, they should not be removed to die from unsuitable care.
Wherever people live there are flowers likely to thrive in well tended gardens. The trick is to identify the ones you like and the ones that like your garden. The overlap between those two classes should result in winning (Onderstall, 1996; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
