    Eulophia ovalis var. bainesii flowers

    Eulophia ovalis var. bainesii flowers
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Judd Kirkel Welwitch

These flowers of Eulophia ovalis var. bainesii present bright yellow lip crests on which the fleshy, thin papillae are a considerably brighter yellow than the sepals and petals. The lateral lip lobes are wavy next to the pale column in the centre. The spur at the back of the lip is from 1 mm to 5 mm long, conical to cylindrical in shape.

The lateral petals are paler than the sepals, the shapes of all these tepals not differing much. The petals may have some dark speckles on the inside. Orientation of petals and lip is forward around the flower centre, while the three sepals spread widely at the back of the flower. The sepals may become as long as 3,6 cm.

Floral bracts, long and pointed, are green up to anthesis, the opening of the flowers. Thereafter they are soon brown and papery (Liltved and Johnson, 2012; Pooley, 1998; iNaturalist).
