Nerine humilis

These Nerine humilis leaves were seen in the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden. N. humilis is a bulbous perennial, in bloom reaching heights from 15 cm to 35 cm.

Its leaves are strap-shaped, 4 mm to 10 mm wide and pale, dull green here. The leaves are dry or just emerging when the plant flowers.

The distribution is in the Western Cape and the western part of the Eastern Cape, from Clanwilliam to Baviaanskloof. The larger plants east of Oudtshoorn may be split off as another species, an unresolved matter in 2010.

The habitat is rocky slopes in various veld types, including fynbos. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; Manning, 2009; www.redlist.sanbi.org).
