The leaves of Searsia tomentosa are trifoliolate, in keeping with this general characteristic of the Searsia genus. Leaflet shape is lanceolate to elliptic or obovate, the leaflets tapering at both ends. The upper surfaces are hairless or slightly velvety and leathery, the lower ones creamy white from velvety to woolly hairs. The margins are often entire, sometimes slightly toothed in their upper parts. Lateral leaflets are slightly smaller than the terminal one that reaches dimensions from 3 cm by 1 cm to 8,5 cm by 4,5 cm.
The variability in leaf-shape is on display in this photo taken in Fernkloof at Hermanus. The narrowly pointed leaves with entire or almost entire margins on the leaflets are matched by broader ones on a robust shoot, their leaflets toothed in the upper parts.
Clearly visible midribs and ascending lateral veins are present on all the leaves; some are yellowish, others dark green with a dull shine and reticulated net-veining (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Van Wyk and Van Wyk, 1997; iSpot).
