Scadoxus multiflorus subsp. katharinae umbel of fruit

Scadoxus multiflorus subsp. katharinae umbel of fruit
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

Some green fruit of Scadoxus multiflorus subsp. katharinae remain in picture upon what was earlier the flower umbel. The green berries in picture will turn scarlet when ripe, remaining on the plant for up to two months. Every years harvest reflects the vicissitudes of the season in the plants life.

The photo was taken in Kirstenbosch at the end of April (Duncan, 2010; www.plantzafrica.com; www.pacificbulbsociety.org).
