Melasphaerula graminea flowering over its neighbours

Melasphaerula graminea flowering over its neighbours
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

The small, creamy Melasphaerula graminea flowers are unevenly spaced on their wiry, branched stems that tend to trail over surrounding bushes, widely when the plant is strong. Each star-shaped flower is only about 1,5 cm in diameter.

A large, rambling inflorescence using neighbouring plants for support is unusual in the Iridaceae family of bulbous plants (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning, 2007; Le Roux, et al, 2005; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist).
