Lachenalia carnosa

Lachenalia carnosa, in Afrikaans commonly known as the Namakwa pers viooltjie (Namaqua purple lachenalia or little violin), produces annual leaves and an inflorescence reaching 10 cm in height from a perennial bulb.

The species distribution is in the Northern Cape part of Namaqualand from Klipfontein near Steinkopf southwards to Garies. The photo was taken north of Springbok.

The habitat is succulent Karoo on sandy flats in the arid winter rain region. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Williamson, 2010; Le Roux, et al, 2005; Eliovson, 1990; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
