Pelargonium leipoldtii is a tuberous or caudiciform perennial, growing a leaf tuft and an inflorescence to 20 cm. Tuberous, root and caudiciform plants are both represented among the xerophytes, those plants adapted to life in a dry habitat, given their moisture storage capabilities.
The leaves in the basal tuft are long-stalked with soft, dull green blades deeply incised into variable, rounded lobes.
The species distribution is mainly in the northwest of the Western Cape from Clanwilliam and Matjiesfontein to the southwest of the Northern Cape as far as Komaggas.
The habitat is fynbos and succulent Karoo on arid outcrops. The habitat population is deemed of least concern early in the twenty first century (Van Jaarsveld, et al, 2006; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
