    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

The leaves of Aspalathus acuminata subsp. acuminata seen here grow in the small node clusters normal for them, the trifoliolate aspect not as easily discerned.

Stalkless and fat-based, the leaflet-bodies end rounded or pointed, some with mucros extending their tips. Mostly dark green, the youngest stem-tip growth is freshly yellow-green.

The younger stems are lemon yellow, a shade soon modified by the addition of slight brownish, while the woody aspect sets in later when stems become whitish grey. Stem-tip spines and dead tips are beige-brown or grey.

Green buds in picture with some way to go before opening, have needle-tipped calyx lobes (iNaturalist; www.fernkloof.org.za).
