Diascia maculata flowering blue-purple

Some Diascia maculata flowers are more blue-purple than pink-purple. The yellow anther cluster on entwined filaments is exserted over the flower mouth.

The long pedicels are sparsely short-haired and soft while green. Sepal tips are acutely pointed, petal lobes well-rounded. The pointed tips of the two spurs are wider-angled and more grandly coloured than the sepals below them.

Leaf margins have few, shallow teeth angled forward. There are smaller leaves or bracts below the flower pedicels.

There are one and a half dry, rough-surfaced capsules produced by earlier flowers in picture, already open and narrowly oblique. Vestiges of dark calyx lobes are still present near the capsule bases. The dry pedicel seems to have elongated in the fruiting stage before desiccation.

There is also a short-stalked, new bud present at the stem-tip on which the calyx still dominates (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning and Goldblatt, 2007; iNaturalist).
