    Widdringtonia nodiflora bark rectangles

    The bark on the upper stem of a mature Widdringtonia nodiflora tree is grey-brown.

    At a certain intermediate stage of stem development it cracks in a fairly regular pattern, forming rectangular strips. Where older bark parts drop off, what is revealed below is dull reddish in colour (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002; Pooley, 1993).
