By some accounts Aspalathus setacea may, in especially favourable conditions, become up to 2,5 m tall. As the habitat is fynbos, thicket and a little in grassland, such tall bushes should be expected in old veld that hasn’t burned for many years. Probably also in especially apposite spots, such as deep, ravine soil where water is often plentiful.

Most of the about 278 Aspalathus species are found in the fynbos, most of their flowers are yellow and peaflower-like. But in addition, many display intraspecies variability in several plant features (Euston-Brown and Kruger, 2023; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; https://www.worldfloraonline.org).
