    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Judd Kirkel Welwitch

When the camera gets really close to a Gladiolus orchidiflorus flower, some of its intimate details are revealed.

Spots become conspicuous on the fleshy surfaces, as well as the gloss, veins and variable colouring on particular surface patches, all in accordance with the plant’s genetic identity.

The important parts in terms of reproduction are shown, whitish diverging style branches dangling over the dark oblongs of the anthers (Goldblatt and Manning, 1998; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist).
