Two signs of Curio radicans leaves taking a breather are present here:
Firstly, the leaves are red instead of green, heralding a lowering of the chlorophyll levels for reducing photosynthesis and slowing metabolism. Secondly the leaf windows are closed, even pressed tight and concealed in leaf-skin folds.
No sunlight can thus penetrate the leaves through their windows where most of the normal photosynthesis happens against the insides of the leaf walls. Succulence is lower now and growth slower as plant wellbeing or even survival indicates rest. Doctor’s orders conveyed in whatever form are not ignored by these patients.
But no worries, the rain will come when it does. And with it the miracle of revival (Louis Jordaan, personal communication; Smith, et al, 2017; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; iNaturalist; https://thesucculenteclectic.com).
